Veronica Loop
Ambury's memorial
DoC recommended times and track type:

2 hours

day tramping track
This loop walk begins and ends above the North Egmont Visitor Centre.  A scenic walk that can be walked in either direction that provides great views of Mt Taranaki and over North Taranaki on a clear day.
Where is it?

Park below the North Egmont Visitor Centre and walk up to the Camp House, either on the Nature Walk, or up the road.  Head to the right of this building for an anti clockwise walk, or head straight up on the left side of the building on the Holly Hut track.

This description describes a clockwise journey.  You begin with a long haul up numerous steps that will raise the heart rate and maybe even a sweat!  In the first couple of minutes keep a look out on the right for the memorial to Arthur Ambury.  Continue on up the steps, taking time to view the scenes behind you or from the lookouts on the left.  The recommended time for this section is 40 minutes, and ends when you get to the sign pointing to the right, where you need to go.

Three more steps and you have a reprieve from climbing for a while, the track winds around, crossing a couple of steeper sections made easier with bridges.  Views from here up to Henry’s Peak and down over Inglewood are fantastic.

Even though the descent is spectacular, remember to turn and look behind you where there are impressive views of Humphries Castle and Mt Taranaki.

Putaputaweta or Marbleleaf or Carpodetus serratus!
The descent briefly becomes quite steep with tree roots for steps at one point.  Also be careful where the track is in danger of collapsing into the valley below, a barrier provides protection. The track heads back toward the Camp House with four or five small gullies and stream crossings to negotiate before emerging unexpectedly at the end of the walk. There is one unusual view just before the old pump shed where you can see the Mountain and Translator, over your left shoulder, not right as you might expect.

A track junction also occurs where the Ram track descends to the left just after the pump shed.

Features

The views, and changing vegetation

Track Surface

Wet in places but mostly gravel surface.  There are some big steps on the way down where erosion has occurred, but this isn’t too challenging.  One small stream crossing that requires care over the rocks.

Accessibility

Either plenty of time, or some level of fitness.

Dangers

Care is required in places where erosion is evident.  Also at one stream crossing, although it is usually dry, the rocks need to be negotiated carefully.
