Poor photo of the great tree
DoC recommended times and track type:

15 minutes

short walk
This loop walk in Northland takes you to the tallest, but not widest, living kauri tree.

Where is it?

You will find this tree on the road between Opononi (26km south) and Dargarville (64 km north).  The track is well signposted with parking on both sides of the road.  The track is on the western side.

The path takes you to a raised viewing area well back from the tree, where common courtesies are expected (see the photo!).  Even with a wide angle lens, you will probably be too close for a photo, the tree is so impressively big, so go back 100m to where you will find a more suitable view.  Even so, in a photo you get no appreciation of the size of this remarkable 1800 year old tree.

Features

The Tree!

Track Surface

Excellent, no steps, and suitable for strollers.

Accessibility

Excellent

Dangers

There is a sign advising that there is to be ‘no busking’ and ‘no soliciting’, these are the only dangers I could see!

Additional Notes

The Waipoua DoC visitor centre a few kilometres to the south has more information.

And allow time for a longer walk, there is a larger but not taller 2000 year old kauri, but the walk is 30 minutes each way.
