Pouakai Track
View from behind Pouakai Hut on the Pouakai Track
DoC recommended times and track type:

Pouakai Summit (trig) to Pouakai Hut 60 minutes

tramping track
This scenic section of walkway runs from the end of the Dover track at the Pouakai Summit down to the back of the Pouakai Hut and through to the old Maude track junction where it changes to the Kaiauai track.
Where is it?

The section of the Pouakai track most often used is from behind the Pouakai Hut around the side of The Hump to the junction of the Ahukawakawa track (that takes you to Holly Hut).  Most of this section is boardwalk.  From this junction the track takes you to the old Pouakai Hut site and up to the trig, the Pouakai Summit.  The timber steps on this last section are severely eroded and best avoided.

From Pouakai Hut heading east, you pass the tarns on your left and experience amazing views down into the Ahukawakawa swamp and up to the Mountain.  This section is nearly all boardwalk too.

Features

The tarns, and the views of the Mountain and over North Taranaki.

Track Surface

The high use sections of this track are on board walks, the lesser used parts are rugged.

Accessibility

If you have made it up to this track, you won’t have any trouble with it at all!

Dangers

At the back of the hump is a section of rock to negotiate that requires care.  The Pouakai Summit end requires time and care as you navigate beside the eroded parts of the track.
