The Northern Circuit
DoC recommended time: 2 days

This picturesque and enjoyable loop walk incorporates a range of habitats on the north eastern side of Egmont National Park.

A variety of tramping experiences can be expected; river bed boulder hopping, steep ascents and descents, easy board walks, and precarious slopes to negotiate.

Most people begin at North Egmont, staying overnight in either Holly or Pouakai Hut.

Which direction to walk? Either is enjoyable, I would tend to go anti clockwise.

Picnic table and viewing area in the Ahukawakawa Swamp.

Although the tracks are mostly clear to follow, a park map would be reassuring in places on this circuit.

The five or six tracks that are used in the circuit are described in greater depth on this site. The following pages correspond to them. All with the exception of North Egmont to Holly are described in anti clockwise direction.

Ram Track

Kaiauai Track

Pouakai Track

Ahukawakawa Track

North Egmont Visitor Centre to Holly Hut

(Kokowai Track)

(A shorter circuit that avoids the Visitor Centre and is no less enjoyable is possible by starting at the Kaiauai Car Park part way up the access road and using the Kokowai Track.)

((Very fit and prepared people can comfortably complete this circuit in a single day in dry conditions and with not too many stops for photos. Experience suggests to allow 10 to 12 hours, and take three litres of drinking water per person.))

This information was gathered while on site in 2004.
