| This track is not the Ngatoro walk that descends from the North Egmont Visitor Centre to Mangaoraka. This walk does begin at the lower car park at North Egmont, but heads to the right along the Maketawa route, before ascending to the Translator Road. It presents a greater challenge than the Connett, but is still an interesting and scenic experience. | |
Where is it?
Begin from the lower North Egmont Car Park and head right on the Maketawa Track. After ascending from the first river crossing which is usually dry, the track divides, continuing to the left to Maketawa, and to the right to the Translator Road, which is where you want to go. Continue the climb, listening to the sounds of water in a hidden stream. When you reach the road, go right, climb over the style beside the gate, and you will find yourself at the Camp House. Continue down the road to the Visitor Centre. You could walk this loop in the opposite direction, but you would have a steeper climb at the end, compared with a more gentle grade if completed clockwise. |

Features Lots of bird life. Track Surface The track surface varies but is mainly rugged, over rocks and tree roots, providing an ideal introduction to ‘real’ tramping! Both ends are graveled, on the Translator Road and Maketawa Track. AccessibilityMiddle Primary children and above should be able to handle this walk. It is more difficult than the Connett because of the greater number of steps, and more uneven track surface. Dangers Care needed on the uneven track, especially when crossing rocks, wet or dry. |
