| This short loop track begins and ends across the access road from the picnic area at Mangaoraka, about two kilometres up the North Egmont access road. | |
Where is it?
Head up the road to the North Egmont Visitor Centre and park at Mangaoraka picnic area, about two kilometres into the Park. The loop walk is across the road, not the Ngatoro Track which heads up to the Visitor Centre. From the picnic area enter the bush and head left. You may see where the loop comes out on your right. After about ten minutes (or half way) is an intersection where you go right. Going straight ahead takes you on a more challenging track to the Waiwhakaiho track that goes down to Rahiri, the entrance to the Park. Just below the junction with the Waiwhakaiho track is a lookout and seat with tremendous views up the river valley to the mountain. Allow an extra 20-30 minutes each way if you take this option. Continue around to the right from the intersection on the most interesting piece of the walk, and then back to the road. Features There are some very large trees in amongst some pretty scruffy bush. Could be a fun walk to do at night. Very few ground growing plants compared to other parts of the Park. Track Surface This is not a well used track with many boggy sections. As it is mostly flat there are few steps. Accessibility This is a very flat track with a low level of difficulty. The muddy sections will pose the only problems, so not a walk for winter. Being so flat offers potential for strollers and wheelchairs, but not until a major upgrade. A worthy project for someone or group. Dangers Crossing the access road will require care, there are no barriers or signs to warn either vehicles or walkers. Additional Notes The picnic area has toilets. The Ngatoro track links to the Visitor Centre, but is a fairly constant uphill climb. The Department of Conservation web site has some information in an excellent PDF file called Egmont National Park. There are also pupil activities at the end of this, see below.
