Manganui Gorge (Ski Field) Track
Sharks Tooth from Manganui Ski Field
DoC recommended times and track type:

30 minutes each way

day walk
This short walk to the Ski field (30 minutes) takes you through a range of fragile areas where humans have had to modify to continue safe access.

Where is it?

From Stratford head up Pembroke Road without turning, into the National Park, past the Mountain House on the left until you get to the car park on the Plateau.  The track begins at the top end of the car park.

Features

You could ski in winter, but playing in the snow is probably just as much fun for school groups.  Even in summer it is an interesting walk.

Accessibility

User friendly for young and old!  The road up to the tunnel, although steep, is sometimes used by vehicles, is not long and won’t take long to get up, maybe 15 minutes.  Junior children could handle this walk.  Adult pupil ratios will really depend on the time of the year and the weather.  A pre site visit will give you an idea.

Dangers

This is a potentially dangerous track, not just from the threat of avalanche.  A falling three metre long icicle in winter could do some damage, snow hides where the track really is, ice is slippery, other track users may not leave much room if for example they are snow boarding down the access road when you are walking up!

Additional Notes

There is much potential in this area for powerful learning experiences.  It is not a challenging walk, so a mix of academic pursuits is particularly appropriate.  The scenery is fantastic, in front and behind you.  A technology focus is obvious, with the cable way, tunnel, and access roads to focus on.  Two and three dimensional art projects on the Manganui monster alone would provide enough interesting follow up activities.

Whether there is snow or not, this is a great place to take a class ‘up the mountain’.

The Department of Conservation web site has some information in a PDF file called Egmont National Park.  There are also pupil activities at the end of this, see below.
