DoC recommended times and track type:

30 - 60 minutes

tramping track
This is an unusual track that provides an alternative, be it longer, to get to or from the upper river crossing on the way to Wilkies Pools.  Please note that this track is classified as a tramping track, not short walk, which reflects some level of difficulty.

Where is it?

Begin above the Dawson Falls Visitor Centre on the Wilkies Pools track.  The bottom loop of the Konini Dell branches to the left a short distance up.  Continuing on to the river lookout means you will be coming down the bigger steps, or take the left turn and make your way quietly and carefully onwards and upwards.  The scenery is pretty, the trees are quite open giving a good view underneath them.

At the top of the steps the track does flatten out and it is a nice stroll to the lookout from here, although you may have to push your way through some astelia.

At the track junction, go right to complete the loop, the lookout where there is a seat, is a few metres down this track.  Going left takes you to the upper river crossing on the way to Wilkies Pools.

Features

With fewer people likely to use this track, its main feature would have to be its peace and quiet.

Track Surface

In good condition

Accessibility

The tramping track classification is entirely accurate in this case.  Don’t be mislead by the name, or size of this track on the map.  Walking this in a clockwise circuit is hard work.  It is steep with some very large steps that would restrict the variety of people able to appreciate this track.

Dangers

It is difficult to identify dangers on what is should be a safe track.  Maybe you could fall if coming down the bigger steps?
