Egmont National Park

Welcome to Top Tracks.info

Egmont National Park has a huge variety of walks in a range of habitats, from a few minutes in length to several days. Most can be enjoyed on a single day. And that is what this web site is about, sharing information on just a few of the tracks available, in the hope that people may realise that these free opportunities are there waiting to be appreciated.

The Park, in the centre of the province of Taranaki, is the most accessible National Park in New Zealand. This is evidenced with eight track access points and three roads that lead into the heart of the park.

Use the links at the left of this window to access information on individual tracks.

This site was set up in 2004 by Martin Baldwin as part of a Royal Society of New Zealand Teacher Fellowship. Its aim is to share information on the tracks within Egmont National Park, so that people, once better informed, might make the effort to go into one of New Zealand's special places.

Considerable assistance was provided by the staff at the hosts for this project: The Department of Conservation (DoC) and WITT (Western Institute of Technology at Taranaki).

All images on this site were taken with a Sony 33e Digital Handycam during the Fellowship year, imported into iPhoto on an Apple eMac, modified with Macromedia's Fireworks MX before being formatted in these pages, using Macromedia Dreamweaver MX.

The Teacher Fellowship Scheme is administered by the Royal Society of New Zealand. This scheme gives New Zealand teachers the opportunity to have time out of the classroom to study topics of their choice in the areas of mathematics, science, or one of the technology fields. Applications close in July each year. Find out more from rsnz.org
