DoC recommended times and track type:

10 minutes

short walk
A two minute walk takes you to a blue rata tree, so named because of the purply blue colour of their wood, according to an info sign behind the Pouakai Hut.   The track continues on to the Stony River, another five minutes.
Where is it?

Carrington Road heads out of New Plymouth towards the Mountain and up and past Pukeiti Rhododendron Gardens, in the Kaitake Ranges.  Above Okato it changes to Saunders Road, with a No Exit extension.  It turns to gravel, crosses a ford and continues towards and beside Stony River.  The reserve is not large, the walk is a short distance in on the right.  There is a small parking area at the side of the road.

Alternately drive to Okato, head up toward the Mountain instead of continuing on the Surf Highway, and instead of the sharp turn right, continue on up toward the Mountain where you should find the No Exit part of Saunders Road to the right.

Dangers

Maybe if the river was in flood, but if you are only going to the tree, then this shouldn't be a problem.
